Best Portland Coffee Shops to Work From: Downtown Portland
One of my favorite parts about working remotely is that “working from home” doesn’t actually have to mean working from home. As a freelance virtual assistant based in Portland, Oregon, I spend a lot of time behind my laptop. Sometimes I love working from home. Other days, I need to put on a cute outfit, get out of my apartment and work somewhere with a little more life around me. Luckily, Portland has no shortage of coffee shops that can double as an office for a few hours.
How I Review WFH Coffee Shops
A good coffee shop and a good work-from-home coffee shop aren’t necessarily the same thing. As I keep exploring Portland, I’m looking at each café from the perspective of someone who actually works remotely. I pay attention to:
Seating and comfort
Wi-Fi
Outlet availability
Noise level
Food and drink options
Whether it feels appropriate to stay for a while
Walkability and location
Overall atmosphere
My ultimate question is simple: Would I actually bring my laptop back here and work for a few hours?

For this guide, I’m focusing specifically on Downtown Portland, Northwest Portland, the Pearl District, and Southwest Portland. I’ve personally visited every café on this list, and I’ll continue updating it as I try more places. And because Portland has so many coffee shops for one post, I’ll be making a separate guide for Northeast and Southeast Portland.
This isn’t meant to be a definitive ranking of Portland coffee shops. It’s an ongoing collection of places I’ve actually visited while working remotely around the city.

Smith Teamaker | NW 23rd
Technically a tea shop, but one of my favorite places to work when I want something a little more elevated. The space is polished, there are plenty of non-coffee options, and you’re right on NW 23rd when you’re ready to close the laptop and walk around. Bonus: they offer $1 iced teas on Tuesdays during the summer.
Vibe: 7/10 (quiet, but only four 2-top tables)
Tea: 7/10 (simple, but a great value on $1 Tuesdays)
Wi-Fi: 8/10 (strong enough for Zoom meetings)
Overall Score: 7.3/10 ⭐
Coffee Time — NW 21st
An old-school neighborhood coffee shop that feels made for settling in with your laptop. There’s plenty of seating, and I don’t feel like I need to pack up the second I finish my drink. Less trendy, more practical—and sometimes that’s exactly what I want.
Vibe: 7/10 (cozy and casual, but pretty dark)
Coffee + Food: 8/10 (good coffee and a yummy breakfast sandwich)
Wi-Fi: 8/10 (solid for a regular workday)
Overall Score: 7.7/10 ⭐
Matta Café | NW 14th & Flanders
A cute, convenient spot between the Pearl District and Northwest Portland. I’ve brought my laptop here for a real work session, and it passes my test for somewhere I’d actually work for a few hours. Doubles as a bar in the evening.
Vibe: 7/10 (cute, but I wish the seats were comfier)
Coffee: 9/10 (strong and creamy)
Wi-Fi: 10/10 (no complaints!)
Overall Score: 8.6/10 ⭐
Snow Bunny Coffee | NW 11th & Overton
Cute coffee, good Wi-Fi and Fields Park right next door. It’s one of my favorite options when I want to get some work done and then spend a little time outside.
Vibe: 9/10 (cute, bright and right next to the park)
Coffee: 9/10 (the Biscoff latte is my favorite)
Wi-Fi: 9/10 (reliable for working)
Overall Score: 9/10 ⭐
Case Study Coffee | SW 10th & Yamhill
A convenient downtown option directly across from the Central Library. The coffee and chai are both good, but it can get busy, and there’s one Wi-Fi quirk remote workers should know about.
Vibe: 8/10 (bright and lively, but usually pretty busy)
Coffee + Chai: 9/10 (both are solid)
Wi-Fi: 7/10 (free, but you have to reconnect every hour)
Overall Score: 8/10 ⭐
All Your Heart Coffee | SW Jefferson
I really like the setup here, especially the upstairs tables and seating. The coffee is good and it’s comfortable for lighter laptop work, but the Wi-Fi limits what I can realistically get done here.
Vibe: 9/10 (love the upstairs seating arrangement)
Coffee: 9/10 (the cinnamon latte was yummy)
Wi-Fi: 5/10 (not strong enough for editing in Canva)
Overall Score: 7.7/10 ⭐
